Koelewijn placed a revolving window in the back wall of the gallery space, giving the public a view of the neighbours’ garden. Ten years earlier, in exactly the same spot, he had made the work ‘The World is my Oyster’: a hole in the gallery wall as big as a football goal (with a football made of peppermints lying ready to shoot) looked out on the same garden. It is clear: for Koelewijn, reality is art enough. The work with the revolving windows is a clear continuation of ‘The World is my Oyster’ from 1996.

“It is a continuation of a way of thinking about reality: that actually everything is already there. And that through interventions, in this case window frames that slowly turn, the perception of reality as you usually know it is briefly disturbed and sharpened.”

Unlike the exhibition in Amsterdam back then, in The Hague Koelewijn sharpens the perception of reality not outside but inside the building. The five windows are spread over the ground floor and the four upper floors of the building. They are set into the blind walls of five offices and look out on the long, open corridors of the floors, which in Evelyne Merkx’s renovation (Merkx + Girod Architects) form the architectural nervous system of the building. In relation to the building’s function, Koelewijn offers the state councillors who work in these five offices an introspective window onto their professional reality. Every day, the revolving windows remind them of the need for a changing perspective, to carry out their ongoing task of weighing things up well.
