Job Koelewijn challenges sports lovers to push their limits not only physically but also mentally. On the fitness equipment in the Amsterdamse Bos, normally devoted to physical effort, you can now train your mind as well.

Koelewijn, who trains his own mind by reading from philosophical works for three quarters of an hour every morning, has added bookshelves to the fitness equipment, holding classics by Western and Eastern thinkers alike. Touching the rings activates a voice reading from books by, for instance, Spinoza, Lao Tzu and Dante. According to Koelewijn, body and mind, word and image are inseparably connected.

With Intervention with the classics he brings mental and physical fitness closer together. In the artist’s view, leisure time and intellectual time both ask for effort. At set times, even if you don’t like physical exertion, you can take a seat on and around the fitness equipment and activate the installation.
